This Is What It Feels Like to Be So Over Your Story

What can I tell you?

I tell myself: just write something short and simple.

Because it’s been fourteen days. Two weeks. A fortnight. Since I shared something with you on the blog. A blog post doesn’t have to change the world, right? Just write something short and simple.

This isn’t the first time I’ve gone two weeks between blog posts since I started editing this story. The Writers of the Future contest story. My main writing mission.

Every time I have a moment to spend on writing, my heart goes to the story. And the blog suffers.

But I miss you.

So here I am as the contest deadline, September 30th, looms just around the corner. That deadline leaves no room for the one week rest. The time you put your work away and let your mind forget, so you can return to it with fresh eyes. It’s easier to spot the problems in your story after the one week rest. But I won’t have that luxury.

That deadline leaves no room for beta reader feedback and edits. Or for the editor feedback and edits. Or for the final, Are You Sure You’re Ready ceremony before you finally hit submit.

I could wait for the next deadline. It’s a revolving contest, after all. But that would mean another year of putting my writing dreams on hold. Preserving my amateur status for the contest means I can’t submit other stories to other places. And I’m tired of waiting. I’m tired of this story. I love this story, but I’m tired of this story.

That’s a lot of pressure to put on one contest. And maybe it won’t pay off. Especially since I have to hurry through the final stretch. But it’s the strategy I planned. And it’s time to let it go. September 30th.

So I edit. Cut. Weave. Comb. I hope I finish in time. I’m so ready to write The End.

What are you up to this week?
